Postgraduate Research Archaeology Symposium

PGR Archaeology Symposium is this week!

May 22, 2012
by Scott Tucker

Hi all,

The big week is finally here! If you’re presenting, you’re surely busy preparing your presentation at the moment. Remember to keep them no longer than 15 minutes as we are quite short on time. For the first 2 sessions on Thursday, we ask that you please send in your presentation via email to pgrsymposium@gmail.com by Wednesday evening so we can make sure that these are ready to go Thursday morning. For the rest of the presenters, you can simply bring your presentation on a USB stick to the table outside of lecture theatre B where one of our coordinators will be on hand with a laptop to collect and organise the presentations.

The photos for the photo contest have also now been printed and are on display currently in the foyer of the Archaeology building! Please have a look as you pass through and take note of the number of your favourite photograph for the vote during the symposium.

Thanks and see you all this Thursday and Friday!

Today is the final day for submissions of your photos for the contest to be held during the symposium! We have received quite a few today, but more would always be better! Just send the images to our email, pgrsymposium@gmail.com

Early next week we will have them printed and on display in the main archaeology building, and a vote will be held during the symposium on the 24th and 25th. The winner will be announced prior to Professor Hinton’s keynote address on the 25th. So check out the photos on our Flickr photostream and keep the photos coming in today.

Hi all:

We have now worked out a schedule for the symposium. You can view it here. We have tried to accommodate everyone’s scheduling requests as best as possible. We are still waiting to hear about some of the session chairs, but have decided to go with faculty members to act in this capacity.

We are still looking for volunteers to help move the event along, so if you are willing to do this, let us know at: pgrsymposium@gmail.com

Also, we are looking for donations of books and baked goods to be sold during the event for our charity, Action on Addiction. And don’t forget about our photo contest! Just send us a photograph that you have taken of something archaeological to the same email address listed above.

Abstract grace period

April 28, 2012
by Scott Tucker

Hi folks,

We have gotten in quite a few abstracts in the last days, bringing our total of presenters up to 42. I know there might be a few stragglers left, so we are going to extend the deadline until NEXT WEDNESDAY, 2 May 2012. We will be meeting on Thursday to work out the schedule, so this is the absolute latest you can get the abstracts in.

Once we have worked out a schedule, it will be available on this website, so please check back for that. Also, a reminder that we are accepting photographs for the photo competition until 17 May, so keep sending them in! Details, and a newly added photostream can be found on the contest page.

Thanks to everyone for their submissions! It looks to be a very interesting symposium!

Keynote Address by Professor David Hinton

April 25, 2012
by Scott Tucker

We have just received the abstract from this year’s keynote speaker, Professor David Hinton, entitled:

A History Boy, 40 Years on

Forty at Southampton, 50 altogether … and no qualifications. The adage that if you remember the 1960s you weren’t part of them does not apply to archaeologists for whom they were the heady days of the rescue movement, unworried by RAE, REF, QAA, PPR, PPG, NPPF and the rest, with jobs in new university departments and new archaeological units, expanding central and local government, and even museums blowing out the cobwebs rather than the curators.

Photo contest reminder

Hi folks,

As you are getting those abstracts in, don’t forget to look for a picture for submission to the photo contest! The only requirements are that the picture was taken by you, and it is of an archaeological nature (which can be loosely applied). All you have to do to submit is simply email us at pgrsymposium@gmail.com with the following:

  • .jpg or .png file of your photo
  • your name
  • photo title
  • photo caption

We’ll take care of the rest! Once we upload them to our symposium flickr account, you can view all of the submissions at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/archpgrsymposium/. We will have each of the photos printed and on display during the symposium. Students and staff may vote on the photos, and the winning photo will be framed and displayed in the Sarah Champion room next to last year’s winner! Thanks to all of those who have already submitted and good luck to everyone!

Also, this Friday is the deadline for abstracts, so please keep them coming in!

Abstract due in at the end of April

April 2, 2012
by Scott Tucker

Hi all,

Just a friendly reminder that abstracts are due in at the end of this month! Just send us your paper’s title, name of your supervisor and 100 words about your project to pgrsymposium@gmail.com. If you have any special scheduling requests, please do let us know early so we can try to accommodate you. Thanks to those of you who have already submitted. The sooner you get these in the better as we could have as many as 81 to enter in to the website, schedule and booklet. Thanks!

All you have to do is email your 100 word abstracts with title and supervisor’s name to: pgrsymposium@gmail.com and we’ll take care of the rest. Keep ’em coming in folks!
