Neanderthal Techno-Economic Behaviour in the Landscape of Northeast Italy
Supervisor: Dr. William Davies
Abstract:
The artefactual record attributed to Neanderthals during the late Middle Palaeolithic of northeast Italy indicates a range of behavioural responses to resource availability in a mosaic landscape. To examine these responses, this research employs techno-economic studies, using a theoretical framework based on Kuhn’s Provisioning Model. Lithic reduction strategies and tool form, as well as flint sourcing, supply, and transport are core foci of this research. Archaeological indicators of site activity and occupational intensity, as determined by lithic, faunal, and structural remains are further contributive to an understanding of how environmental diversity may have influenced Neanderthal mobility and provisioning behaviours.
