Maritime Cultural Landscapes of Magan: Re-analysing and interpreting the Bronze Age Coastal Settlements and Maritime Connectivity of the Ja’alan region, Oman.

Supervisor: Dr. Lucie Blue

Abstract:

The interpretation of maritime activity and trade relationships within the Arabian Gulf and
neighbouring regions have been the subject of considerable investigation in recent years. While significant advances have been made to our understanding of Bronze Age trading systems in this region, further study is necessary to better understand the social aspects of exchange and the role of seafaring communities at this time. This paper will examine these themes and begin to deconstruct the role of maritime settlements of the Ja’alan region during the Bronze Age from a maritime perspective, shedding light on the role of Magan within a wider exchange network and the cultural relationships these coastal communities shared.
